CLAYTON -- Someone managed to start a bulldozer and caused significant damage to Clayton's new community center.
The vandalism apparently happened in daylight Saturday, said Police Chief Glen Allen.
The center, at 715 Amelia Church Road, is under construction.
The vandal or vandals smashed in a wall, knocked over scaffolding and drove the equipment over piles of building materials, according to photos police released Monday. The town has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information.
Allen said the damage was discovered by a patrol officer about 6:45 p.m. It is not clear how the hoodlum got the bulldozer started, Allen said.
Although most of the damage isn't visible from the road, Allen hopes someone in the park nearby may have seen something.
Town officials said the damage will delay the spring opening of the new 30,000-square-foot center, but it's not clear how long it will take or how much it will cost to fix. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Andy Jernigan at (919) 553-1599.
